Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels spoke at Washington's Willard hotel this evening, and gave an extremely impressive performance. Daniels was receiving the Herman Kahn award from the Hudson Institute (where I am a Senior Fellow) and he gave thoughtful and unscripted remarks on how we could use Kahn's cast of mind to address some of the myriad problems we face today. As Daniels put it, Kahn -- who co-founded Hudson in 1960 -- brought a mix of principle, pragmatism, skepticism, and optimism to finding solutions, and never failed to use humor to illustrate key points. Daniels seems to have absorbed all of those lessons, telling a variety of funny stories, belittling the statist approach that doubts the ability of people to make decisions to govern their own lives, and above all insisting that conservatives never get down on the American people. Daniels said there is no doubt that humanity will continue its march towards progress and innovation; the only question was whether America would pursue the policies that would enable this country to lead that march.
