In anticipation of Zohran Mamdani's victory in the New York mayoral race, I acquired a newsboy-style cap to wear in New York City.
For most of my adult life, I have worn a kippa, an indication of being an Orthodox Jew. I wear it wherever I go, good neighborhoods and bad, on the subway and at the park.
The vast majority of people have no reaction, which is as it should be. I'm not asking for anybody to comment, just as I don't comment on anyone else's religious garb, be it a hijab, a cross or a turban.
For a long time, when I did get a reaction, it was positive. Many people have said they pray for Israel. I thank them, as I am grateful for their support.
In recent years, though, I've noticed more negative reactions, often from people shouting "Free Palestine!" Occasionally people act more threatening...
